Such sad news, a great and true republican, said it how it was, stuck to his principles regarding the 1916 declaration, one of a few. If he had known at the time that information was being with held from the army council regarding the hunger strikers, there would have been heads rolling, and , that is fact. R.I.P.

my own view is that he would never have set a trap for the hunger strikers. I think it took him a while to fully embrace Richard O'Rawe's narrative. That was largely because he was on the army council and had no knowledge of the offer and the committee decision to shaft the hunger strikers. He would have seen the 5th of July visit to the prison hospital on a scale with Ballyseedy in terms of betrayal.

I posted it under this article because he was a great supporter of the protesting men and women. I hope he has left us his thoughts on the crucial events leading up to Joe's death and after. His contribution would be important to a fuller understanding of the time. He has said already he knew nothing of any offer made to and accepted by the prisoners. As a humanist would he have changed history by intervening to save Joe and the others?

The news has just come through that Ruairi O'Bradaigh has died. I am moved by this sad occurrence. He connected us to an era before the present phase of struggle and has left us a honourable legacy of dissent. Ruairi was a progressive thinker who sought his in his personal life to apply the ideals contained within the Proclamation and the Democratic programme to solving the twin contradiction of occupation and exploitation. A man of courage and conviction, he would not compromise his principles for self-promotion nor for the crumbs of the imperial master's table. He died as he lived.
