AM, Marty- There is an animated Israeli film called "Waltz with Bashir" about the massacre of refugees in the Sabra and Shatila camps in Beirut in 1982. It is a powerful retelling of what happened. Devastating.

Das Boot has three or four versions. The uncut version of 293 minutes is better than the 209 minutes directors cut. I think there was a theatrical cut also.

The films I mentioned are relatively new. One of my all time favourite stories is the older two part "Jean de Florette" and "Manon de Source" starring Gerard Depardieu which is a beautiful life-affirming drama. The 2 DVD set is very cheap, you can get it for £6.49 online which is a steal. I couldn't praise it enough.

Have you seen the Danish film "In a Better World"? It won an Oscar in 2010. I really liked it. The French film "A Prophet" is good also. But the German film "The Lives of Others" is one of my all-time favourites and won the best film in a foreign language Oscar in 2007.

I would recommend all three in reverse order but I would watch without any background reading as it may spoil your enjoyment.
