Germans are very ashamed of WWII, most had relatives in the or SS, the Nazi Party or at least the Wharmacht.
It is taboo. In 3 years working as a barman only a handful of German people ever mentioned the war to me and they were usually drunk.

I have The Forgotten Soldier somewhere but have not got around to reading it. I hope it is not another Sven Hassel type account. Beevor's Berlin is in the house and I want to carve out space to read that. I have the two Erickson books which have yet to be read. I like the Eastern front narratives and I really enjoyed Beevor's Stalingrad. I did most of my reading on WW2 in 1982 when I went through a real thirst for intensive reading having spent the previous three and a half years without any books at all. Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich was read during that period. On the end of the war I can't recommend highly enough the DVD Downfall. Did you watch Das Boot? I need to finish the Viktor Klemperer accounts although they cover a much wider period. He was a brilliant diarist. I read the Goldhagen one on Germany’s Willing Executioners. Enthralling stuff but methodologically suspect.

I read the memoir "A Woman in Berlin" recently filmed, Gunter Grass' short novel about the collapse of the Danzig corridor, and Guy Sajek's account as a Frenchman fighting on the Eastern Front, "The Forgotten Soldier," which I particularly recommend, although his powers of recall seem to defy credibility as often appears the case in war narratives, unless the mind under the pressure of life-or-death does indeed heighten recollection in tranquility. How did you find Beevor's work on Germany 1945 compared to the other histories out on this topic, or W.G. Sebold's last book on the Allied bombings of the German cities?

I shall try to get my library to stock this book.
I used to live in the Rhineland and one of the saddest places I have ever seen was a German war grave from 1945.
It was full of young men (I would say average age 19 or 20) who died in 1945 fighting the Americans. The gate bore the inscription Unsere Helden (our heroes). I visited it often it was deep in a forest (the Soonwald) and was a good place to meditate.

In all the time I was there I never saw one single soul visit the place.
