Tehran is ultimately where this is really headed once Syria has been dispatched alongside the vanquished Hussein and Gadaffi regimes. For Iran is the real target. But behind that again, just as the 60 year-old, ongoing conflict on the Korean Peninsula provides opportunity for the curtailing and containment of Chinese expansion, Russia and the fear of a resurgence in Russian power is the true modus operandi behind what&#39;s going on in Syria and the wider Middle East. It&#39;s all just another chapter in &#39;the Great Game&#39; of power politics with the Syrian people caught up in the geo-political designs of the world&#39;s only remaining superpower. Their crime? Like Chile under Allende the only crime is independence from US-foreign policy control - political and economic.<br /><br />In terms of Syria itself there would be no continuing armed &#39;insurgency&#39; without the British, the Americans, and their erstwhile lackeys in the Gulf Monarchies, alongside the Ottoman cheat-master Erdogan. It would have been defeated long ago. Because the people of Syria, despite any reservations or opposition some may have held toward Assad before this conflict began, reject what are ultimately being exposed now as the mercenary terrorists of the Al Qaeda and are not in favour of regime change, especially foreign-sponsored regime change. Who could blame them given the hardly-shining examples of Iraq and Libya; also secular Ba&#39;athist societies where sectarianism was fomented, encouraged and then exploited to suit the purposes of Washington&#39;s external, imperialist interest - to manipulate and control post-invasion Iraq in the former instance and to bring about the removal of the legitimate Libyan government in the latter. The Libyan template has effectively been applied to Syria, destabilisation in the guise of a CIA/MI6/Mossad manufactured &#39;uprising&#39; using paid Al Qaeda proxies and regional allies with a sectarian interest in seeing the downfall of the Assad regime, like Gaddafi&#39;s beforehand. The Al Qaeda is not America&#39;s enemy here but its willing tool, forget the War on Terror; this is a War OF Terror.<br /><br />This is about a radical restructuring of the Middle East and North Africa, this is about &quot;7 countries in 5 years&quot; as Bush II planners set-out in the secret memorandum of the neo-con &#39;Project for a New American Century&#39; when they entered the White House after the stolen US Presidential Election of 2000, this is about a New World Order and the prospect of achieving the much-vaunted and sought after &#39;full spectrum dominance&#39; writ large in the imperial ambition of the only empire left standing. It proved beyond reach in the five years initially envisaged by Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld and the other sociopath&#39;s of the Bush II White House but the project continues regardless of changes in personnel at no.1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - Obama&#39;s foreign policy is merely a continuation of that bequeathed him by GW and the neo-con Right.<br /><br />Syria is in their cross-hairs at the minute and it&#39;s for this more than any other reason that the ongoing slaughter continues relentlessly. Ultimately if you take American influence out of the equation the conflict would be over inside a month. God help them but such an end is far from sight for the people of Syria given the ruthless determination of the US and its allies to win for themselves the prize of a Syria which they can control regardless of the horror left in their wake. The end, as always, justifies the means - the people of Syria do not count.
