for some reason he also named Tiny Little John. Porta was funny. Liked the Old Un and the Legionaire. They were good reads at that time.

The double - anybody who needs it and does it will not be getting called out in the pages of TPQ.

I read Sven Hassel about 30 years ago and loved them all-people who did not know thought I was reading a book about the Nazi's-the last thing on earth Porta-tiny-the old man were was Nazis-I am reading book two of the century trilogy-Winter Of The World by Ken Follett-a great read about the lead up to world war 2 and he puts into great detail how hitler got the votes to become dictator-

forgot to say that I was really into Sven Hassel when I was an imprisoned teenager. I remember when I was 17 finding this book called Wheels of Terror and it said on the blurb 'the book no German published dared print' (probably not verbatim). So once I read that, natural curiosity got the better of me - the forbidden always does - and that began my very productive relationship with Sven Hassel.

Apparently he is a spoof but who cares? He was good at it. I always remember this screw called Freddie Chambers in the blocks when I was doing a six month sentence while on remand for having a stolen car. Freddie (now dead) was as decent a guy as you could ever wish to meet. Civil, courteous, did his job and treated no one unkindly. He liked books and on more than one occasion brought them in from home and gave them out to prisoners like myself. I got a couple of Sven Hassel from Freddie. He was ex RUC but not an ounce of hostility in the man. Just one more along the journey of life that I was glad to know and share some time with.

I have had the same experience. But unlike you I tend to enjoy it. Getting something for free appeals to me? It is just like doing the double!! Now, go on, tell us, you have never done the double!! Don't answer, I don't want you getting hounded out of your position for it even if your party is putting the boot into 'benefit frauds'! I don't think I ever met anybody in SF who didn't do the double but that's another story.

On occasion I have declined the offer. My wife looks at me when I rush in with a new find telling her how delighted I am to have acquired this important book only to be led by the hand to one of the bookshelves to be shown the same book that I came home with last year.

Anyway, Michaelhenry, despite our political differences, you are a lover of books and that puts us on the same side!

Was walking up the town one day when I seen a few books in the front window of a charity shop one of the books was a Sven Hassel one-
I had read them all before but this one had a different cover-anyway I checked the rest of the books and brought two [ pound a book ] to the check-out counter where the young blade behind the counter informed me that if I bought two books I could get a third one free-I told her I was ok with the two books and handed over the two pounds-but she must have thought it her duty to give me a third book and told me just to go back and pick another one for free-
I did not like the look of the other books and told her so-she surprised me next by saying that there were plenty of other books stacked into two boxes behind the curtains at the back of the store-its then that I noticed her low top
and that there was no one else about-the devil in me thought this floosy is looking a bit so I went to look at these boxes and she just got down on her knees and give me the first book she found and said there you are-A cookery book by delia smith-well the snob came right up in me and I told her for the third time that I was happy with two books-she went back into the box and after a rummage I was handed a book by a author who I had seen in most book-shops but one which I never read-[snob again ]to be polite I took the third book for free just to get away and I threw that book into a cupboard at home-a while passed and
