John Hume reminds me a wee bit of Caila Parker Bowles' husband, 'the man who layed down his WIFE for the crown'.
John Hume layed down hist party for peace.
But he did go gracefully unlike your average TD who have been resident in their priviledged jobs for up to 30 odd years and refuse to budge.

I still cannot believe John Hume actually accepted that title. How he seriously think that he was the greatest Irish man ever?

Sat beside him and drank a pint at the bar the Thomas Moore Tavern in Wexford about 20 years ago.

Didn't even bother speaking to him. What an oppertunity missed to chat with the greatest Irish man ever to drink Guinness and eat spuds.

Oh well, that's life,

Rory

I think the person who nominated him was worse than Hume was.
How come the Master was not on the list, he must be in line 'for the greatest being who ever lived award'

Fionnuala
I have to ask the question in this world of reality TV these programs make for good viewing and generate lots of high ratings. But I feel you are being a bit unfair to John Hume when you say "How can he seriously think that he was the greatest Irish man ever?". First of he didn't request to be put into contention for same and secondly why should he not be the greatest Irishman, don't forget this was people's opinions. Also and I think this goes to very heart of the programme, there were people whom thought Bono should have been top Irish man .
PS Was amazed and am serious about this , was really expecting G Adam's name to appear I was sure the Shinner's would have lobbied for him .
Phew maybe there is a God

michaelhenry,
What about the oath?
Betty Boothroyd said, the oath will not be amended to allow Sinn Fein into Westminster, this means they will have to take the same oath as all the other British ministers.
I think they are going to allow them to take it in the dark, then they can say it never happened just like the decommissioning!

interested,
Whether Hume knew or not is irreleveant, I thought the result was absolutely cringe worthy out of decency he should have declined.
I agree with you totally about Bono, he is just an idiot atalented idiot but an idiot never the less.
I think John Hume is a very decent person, however I think the fact that he was picked over people like Wolfe Tone and Connolly just diminished the credibility of the award.

Nuala,

‘I still cannot believe John Hume actually accepted that title. How he seriously think that he was the greatest Irish man ever?’

And at the same time think that big Percy Pompous wasn’t. Hume should know he has Percy’s title by default. That’s something else to add to the Nobel Peace Prize he stole on Percy too. Thieving rogue.

Mackers, big Pompous must be livid.
He should be in with a shout, 'for the best liar ever' award.

Fionnuala-

thought we were friend's now a days

Fatty betty can go and take a long
jump of a high clif- there will be
no oath to the crown, or any other form of words to get in-to a
foreign set up

decommissioning- SINN FEIN never had any guns- they only had the
weopon of democracy- you did ask.

"how John Hume was picked over Wolfe Tone and Connolly diminished the award" John Hume will probably go down in history as one of the most important contributors to the Irish cause for freedom ever, he really has given his life to not only bringing about the peace that we nearly have, but also bringing about a better quality of life to the trod upon Catholics of the North , like it or not, it was he and his comrades whom took up the cudgel and ran with it straight into the might of the British establishment , he wasn’t sulking behind masks and alleyways taking pot shots then running away , he also stood up and declared that he wanted a seat in the Stormont castle seat of the hated and despised unionists , he didn’t wait for 40 years to realise that violence doesn’t work and then accept that yeah maybe democracy is the way , John Hume may be hated by certain sections of the community but what he said in 69 he was still saying in 2009 unlike some of the pretend Irish heroes of the modern era . Why he was condemned should be obvious to everyone now he disagreed with the Provo dictate and he was crucified for same just like anyone today whom does same , I am and never was an SDLP voter or supporter but my instincts do tell me that in John Hume we have someone of the highest integrity living , we shall never know how he will be viewed in 100 years time but I do reckon he will be viewed as a man who done a considerable amount for this wee island
PS did anyone witness Pearse Docherty trying to scream down Joan Burton on Prime Time recently I was waiting with bated breath for him to say the “I wouldn’t be surprised if Cowan was found dead some night “ the recently recorded view held by most other top ranking Shinners to their highly held views

Interested,
John Hume is hardly in the same league as people like Connolly and Tone, they were outstanding people.
John Hume was to the fore in the Civil Rights movement and then entered politics. I don't think he made major contribution other then becoming a persuader.
What do you mean he took the 'cudgel and ran with it'
I do not think he caused too many shock waves with the British establishment, Peace at any Price, hardly dealt a major blow to the Brits.
'He wasn't sulking in alleyways and taking pot shots behind a mask.' By all accounts you certainly were not either because that is a nonsense comment.
I agree with you he was tortured by people who then done the things they condemed him for, however that does not make him great, just a constitutional politican.

michaelhenry,
We are friends, disagreeing friends! The Master usually does a disappearing act when something is about to go down. I think in this instance Betty is telling the truth.

Interested where is the 'better quality of life' currently taking place? The only thing our politicans devoted their time to was themselves. None of them ever rocked any boats, might have bought a few though.

Nuala,

'big Pompous must be livid.
He should be in with a shout, 'for the best liar ever' award.'

A shout? A deafening roar. He will win hands up. His hands have been up for some time now.

Mackers, he is would be in line for the oscars for the lies he has spun. Bet his lies in confession, well then that would be a two way street.

Nuala,

‘What about the oath?

I think they are going to allow them to take it in the dark, then they
can say it never happened just like the decommissioning!’

Brilliant. Oh, you know them so well.
